The work desk indirectly, representing one self. It can be also be view as an extension of our careers and aspirations.
Personally, this the second spot I recommend for a Feng Shui Make-over. It is the first spot I request if you want to “change your job” or “get a promotion”.
Here’s the simple truth, to feng shui the desk requires two aspects. One is the bazi. The other is one interaction with Qi. Commonly it is the use of Ming Gua (命卦). A way to personalizes the energy flow based on your Kua number, aligning your workspace with directions that support your goals.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Step 1: calculate your Ming Gua Number
- For Men (born before 2000):
Subtract the last two digits of your birth year from 10. If the result is double digits, add them until you get a single digit.
Example: 1985 → 10 — (8+5) = 3 (Ming Gua = 3) - For Women (born before 2000):
Add the last two digits of your birth year to 5. If the result is double digits, add them until you get a single digit.
Example: 1985 → 5 + (8+5) = 18 → 1+8 = 9 (Ming Gua = 9) - Post-2000 Adjustments: Replace 10 with 9 for men and 5 with 6 for women.

Step 2: Align desk setup
Each Ming Gua number corresponds to favorable and unfavorable directions. Starting from the whole floor layout and move to the room, and your space.
Favorable Directions (优方)
- Sheng Qi (生气): Energy for wealth, growth, and opportunities. Good for activating promtions with hardwork.
- Tian Yi (天医): Energy for health and well-being. Good for work life balance.
- Yan Nian (延年): Energy for relationships and networking. Good for team building and HR.
- Fu Wei (伏位): Energy for stability and focus. Good for maintaining the current. Yield good results.
Unfavorable Directions (凶方)
- Avoid facing Jue Ming (绝命) or Liu Sha (六煞) directions, as these bring challenges.
- Minimize use of Huo Hai (祸害) and Wu Gui (五鬼) directions, which can cause conflicts but sometimes for people with real Feng Shui knowledge this can be a good direction if circumstances allow it like activate in opening a bidding war for a government project.
- The simple explanation is Ming Gua calculates the direction is one trigram and the person is the other trigram togather combine they are the hexgram. For people who are confuse and want to learn Feng shui look up 3 words, Bakua, I-ching and Hexagram.
- The disclaimer, for those appling simplify Feng Shui yourself. You are in control of your destiny with full responsibility and working within the Ming Gua system. If you are working with color, trying to do Feng shui from a book or from someone explanation, you are most likely working within this system.
Step 3: Desk arrangement
- Use a compass to identify the directions in your workspace. Find North and South, East and West.
- Then locate the best direction bese on two aspects, the command position by calculeting flavorite directions from your birthday and then recalculate with Ming Gua. The other checklist are;
- Commanding Position: Place your desk so you have a clear view of the door but are not directly in line with it. It represent one’s control.
- Solid Backing: Try to have a solid wall behind you for support and stability in the work space. It is important with the except maybe people who are working creative or IT or accounting (non-audit).
- Natural Light: Position your desk to accept extra positive Qi. Good for career.
- Shape: Rectangular desks are ideal as they symbolize stability and focus. L-shaped desks can enhance multitasking but must be positioned correctly to avoid Sha or bad energy.
- Align computer:put your main work tool with your most auspicious direction. This can also be a planner or calendar.
Step 4: Personal elements
Once your desk aligns with a favorable direction, enhance its energy with specific objects accounding to your Bazi:
- For Wealth: Place a wealth bowl in the Sheng Qi direction.
- For Health: Add plants items in the Tian Yi area.
- For Relationships: Use meaningful photos in the Yan Nian.
- For Stability : Keep this space clutter-free and clean Fu Wei.
By thoughtfully use of Feng Shuied your desk. You create a space with intentions that supports your personal and professional goals. We usually say that t‘s like adding a catalyst for productivity, clarity, and balance.
For those who seek quicker and more impactful results, we’ll layer this action with yearly noble man star or wealth activation, or maybe a more complex Feng shui system. Personally, I find applying this method is less intrusive and as effective especially if you apply layers of Personal element with combination date selection.
